Bohemian Retreat for Digital Detox
Shortlisted design project on the topic about Bohemian Design from Archiol Competitions 2021
In the world where monochrome is the norm, one must long for a dash of color. A breath of fresh air. Stability and organized society made us bare. We long for that something humanly inborn that we lost, something that could inspire us and make us 'fly'. A good story, an inspirational moment, an impulse, exciting heartbeat, a hope to exist. We are all nomads on the inside. Whether we officially proclaim it or not. Constant movement is something naturally inborn in all human beings.
Having 'a lot' and standing stable is often a burden that is publicly shown as a 'good life'. Actual good life starts on the inside. The more you posses the more you are attached . The less you are attached, the more 'something inner' and 'something that cannot be bought' overcomes you. Muses reside in the hearts of those who are not attached to material things. They are devoted to the intangible. Material things are perishable, so why to get attached to it. That is the feeling of bohemianism.
Bohemian style and fashion, as it is popularized today, has not much in common with its humble origin. It was originally created from not having plenty of material things and having an experience of no stability. Having “less” to certain extent meant more freedom and spontaneity. No institutional bondage. No norms. Just create, just exist as it comes. They did not care about style, it was created out of necessity. Often great ideas and insights are formed in the humblest of surroundings.
There is one paradox: the more technologically advanced we are the more strange deviations in art are being formed, the more primitive and basic gadgets we poses the more soulful art forms are being created.
Bohemian style is a great attention grabber. Home decor and fashion industry took its appealing expression and turn it into selling point. It became just a fabricated exterior shape of something that in its true meaning is a distant memory.
Nowadays, since we are immersed into our screens, our human creative force becomes easily neglected. Digital detox is something everyone needs in order to maintain their well-being. There is no better design than bohemian to make an effort and try to create a small retreat room. A place where no screens are allowed. A room where one goes for a digital detox for few hours, or a day.
It is a room with arched windows and arched doorway with beaded curtain so one can easily go out and in whenever it wants some peace and quiet. 'Bohemians' like their layers and variety, so every wall in this room has different texture: brick wall, yellow painted wall, floral wallpaper and wallpaper wall made of messy vintage travel/entertainment posters.
Plants are the rulers of the bohemian inspired space. Many of them. South wall with windows has hanged plant pots on walls and the giant Elephant Ear plant takes a lot of space next to the brick wall. Pillows and floor seating, all in full bloom colors, give a lot of bohemian feel to the space and is very inviting. Shelves are full of plants, books, scarfs, interesting objects, instruments, paint, pencils...all that gives a creative flare.
You might be surprised by how much rest and inspirational insights you can get spending a day without the screen, and surrounded by things that you can actually use. It forces you to go back to fundamentals of human existence that was in reach before the 'invention of the screen'.
